Renewing Borrowed Materials
How do I renew items?
Some materials borrowed can be renewed three times (extending the loan period) subject to the conditions outlined below. A renewal starts as of the current date, not when the item was originally due. Customers can renew their materials by contacting staff directly either in person or by phone, or by accessing their “My Account” page through the Internet Public Access Catalogue (IPAC) on the Library website. Interlibrary loans must be renewed by speaking to a staff member in person or on the phone (x 2047).
Why can’t I renew an item?
Items will not be renewed if:
- There is a hold request placed on the item by another customer or staff member
- There has already been 3 renewals of the item
- The customer’s Library card has expired or will expire before the renewal date
- The customers’ Library card owes more than $20.00
What happens if I don’t pay my fines?
Belleville Public Library does not charge late fees for materials returned past their due date for most items. If an item is more than 14 days overdue, the borrower will be automatically charged for the replacement cost of the item and a processing fee. If you return the item both fees will be automatically removed from your library card.
Please return your items on time so that others can enjoy them. You can return items to our downtown location or at our book drop located at the Quinte Sports and Wellness Centre. You can sign up for email or text message alerts that will notify you of items on your card that are coming due soon or items that are overdue.
If there are fees owing on a Library card that exceed the threshold of $20.00, the account will be blocked. Patrons with blocked accounts cannot take out library materials, place holds, or renew items. Account and borrowing privileges will be reinstated when the amount has been paid below the $20.00 threshold.
Please note: for materials borrowed through our partnership with Quinte West Public Library, there may be some variation due to their policy.
Payment may be made by cash, cheque, debit, MasterCard or Visa. NSF cheques will be charged a service fee.
Maximum Number of Checkouts
The maximum number of items you can borrow at any one time is 75. Additionally, there are some item restrictions:
Reference items and the current issues of magazines may be used on-site only. The library reserves the right to limit the number of popular seasonal material or other categories in which there are limited holdings.
What happens if I’ve lost or damaged something I’ve borrowed?
Members are responsible for all materials while on loan to them, and should report lost or damaged material at the earliest opportunity. A replacement cost of the material (varies according to the material and indicated on the computer record for each item) will be charged to the card and a processing fee of $7.00 per item will also be levied.
The Library will not accept a replacement copy or an item of equivalent value. If replacement cost is unknown (not on the item’s computer or MARC record), the following charges are applied:
Material | Charge |
Book, audiobook,DVD, videocassette | $30.00 |
CD, mass market paperback | $12.00 |
Children’s board book | $12.00 |
Magazine | $5.00 |
A customer can bring in an item that was previously reported lost, accompanied by a receipt, for a full refund, minus any overdue fines accrued and the processing fee. The Library reserves the right to deny refunds on items that are damaged or items for which no computer or receipt record of payment is available.
