Children's Reading Challenges

For pre-readers, families and caregivers are invited to take part in our 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program. For children in kindergarten to grade 8, we offer our Junior Librarian Reading Club. Pick up a reading log from the Reader’s Advisory desk to begin tracking your reading! For more information about both reading challenges, see below.

1000 Books Before Kindergarten

1000 Books Before Kindergarten encourages all families and caregivers to read 1000 books with their young children before they enter kindergarten.

Studies have shown that families who start reading aloud to their children at birth help strengthen their language skills and build their vocabulary – two important tools when they begin learning to read in kindergarten.

At each 100 books, come visit us for a sticker. When you reach 250, 500, and 750 books, you’ll get an extra special sticker! When you reach 1000 books, we will present your child with a 1000 Books Before Kindergarten certificate.

Junior Librarian Reading Club

The Junior Librarian Reading Club challenges children to read for 5000 minutes. Every month, children that read for at least 400 minutes can visit the library to claim the special monthly reading prize. Children that complete the program will receive an MLIS Jr. certificate (Master of Library & Information Science), a Junior Librarian badge, and join our Junior Librarian Wall of Fame. Special button badges can be earned by reading five books from a reading category on the Jr. Librarian Badge Sheet (you will receive this sheet at Reader’s Advisory along with your reading log).
